With our work as Sabry Marouf, we have made no secret of the fact that we take many of our design cues from a long-distant past: the symbology and symbolism of Ancient Egypt provide us with constant inspiration and near endless depths of possibility. Sprawling, fertile fields of discovery. Our shared history is a bountiful, natural resource.
Still, when we are creating, we are working in the present day. The reverence that we hold for our heritage informs everything that we do, but so do the processes and possibilities afforded to us in the here and now.
What is perhaps most important, however, is that we do not see these two worlds as distinct. We do not separate the things which have come before from those which are happening before our eyes every day. Time, in its way, is circular and -- in our way of thinking -- all of this is happening at once; it feels a strange and violent thing to rend these concepts from one another, when they are both so tangible to us.
It’s with this in mind, that we have created the Sabry Marouf journal. A place for our thoughts to coalesce and crystalise, and a way for us to invite you to explore the world that we inhabit, beyond the end result of the artefacts which we create.
We have always been keen to make our processes as transparent and as honest as possible, in terms of our impact on the Earth and the ethics of our production, it only stands to reason we would want to do the same with our creativity.
Sabry Marouf, after all, does not exist in a vacuum; we are as much a part of the world as it is a part of us.
Our hope is that we can translate a sense of wonder, which is so intrinsic to our process, into words and images, for you to explore in your own ways.
As creators, we do not work alone. People, places, concepts and conscience leave an imprint on everything that we do – and, in turn, we leave our own imprint on them. With this space, we intend to let these relationships blossom and bloom.
The Sabry Marouf Journal will bring the talents and voices of those talented craftspeople with whom we share a vision and are now forever entwined. It will be a vehicle for us to work with multidisciplinary artists and creatives from the worlds of the written and spoken word, of music, of still and moving image and of the contemporary artists unbound by media or medium.
These pages will be, in part, a showcase for their work and their own, personal histories and journeys which brought them to their craft, as well as a celebration of their techniques – some new and boundary-pushing, others more ancient but not without their own sense of spectacular innovation.
Here, we will also explore things much less tangible – ideas, concepts, thoughts in the air – which have given us pause, piqued our interest, and sent us on often days-long journeys of our own. Sometimes these journeys have been literal. Other times, metaphorical. Regardless, We have always come back from these expeditions feeling renewed in our sense of curiosity.
Our hope is that we can translate that sense of wonder, which is so intrinsic to our process, into words and images, for you to explore in your own ways.
Sometimes, we will talk about materials and material processes – about what goes into our bags, in real terms. Others, we might talk about the symbolism and meaning of cats in Ancient and Present Day Egypt, making connections between then and now.
In short, there is no exact science to what you’ll find here – just as there is no exact science which dictates the principles of creativity. What we do know is that we intend for this space to be intellectually and philosophically diverse; to be rewarding, for us, as we bring together the loose ends of our thoughts and tie them into stronger knots which, we hope, will hold and create lasting connections.
Above all, we hope to make you welcome here. And we hope that you will find something which, at the very least, briefly captivates your imagination.
